The Six Systems Model: Personality, Cognition, and Individual Differences
Two people can want the same result, have the same tools, and face the same deadline. One starts by sketching possibilities. The other builds a checklist. One notices what could go wrong. The other notices what might be gained. Put them on the same project and those differences can look like taste, attitude, competence, or stubbornness—depending on which person is telling the story.
A personality model can give us better names for some of those differences. But personality is not the whole person. Reasoning, learning, and problem-solving ability also shape what a task demands and what a person can do with it.
Six Systems is my early-stage framework for thinking about these individual differences together. It places Cognition beside five areas that roughly correspond to the broad domains of the Big Five personality model: Threat Detection, Reward Seeking, Exploration, Social Cohesion, and Resource Management.
The framework is meant to generate hypotheses. It is not a new six-factor discovery, a personality test, a diagnosis, or a biological map. The functional names do not imply six separate brain modules, and they do not let you predict a person’s behavior from a label.
What is the Six Systems model?
Jason Hreha’s Six Systems model is a developing practitioner framework for considering cognition and five broad areas of personality when analyzing individual differences. Its six areas are:
- Cognition
- Threat Detection
- Reward Seeking
- Exploration
- Social Cohesion
- Resource Management
The five personality areas have a deliberate correspondence with the Big Five. The labels shift attention from trait names toward broad behavioral functions. Cognition sits beside them because ability can change how a person understands a task, learns its demands, and finds ways to act.

Roughly is doing real work in that table. The Six Systems labels are not validated replacements for the Big Five domains. The model has not shown that Threat Detection, for example, is psychometrically identical to Negative Emotionality, or that the six areas form a new measurement structure. Why include cognition?
Imagine two people who are equally curious about a difficult subject. One can quickly hold several conditions in mind, detect the rule connecting them, and transfer that rule to a new example. The other needs more time, a clearer representation, or more practice. Calling both people “open” tells us something about their typical interest in ideas. It does not tell us how easily they can solve this particular problem.
Personality traits and cognitive abilities are usually studied as distinct families of individual differences. They can overlap and influence the same outcomes, but one should not be smuggled into the other. Ackerman and Heggestad’s review of intelligence, personality, and interests examined patterns of overlap while retaining those distinctions.
Six Systems makes cognition visible because practical tasks often depend on both what a person tends to do and what the person can do under the relevant conditions. This is a design choice in the framework, not evidence that psychology has discovered a sixth Big Five trait.
What does “system” mean here?
System is a functional label for a broad set of tendencies and capacities. It does not mean each area lives in one brain region, runs on one neurotransmitter, or works independently from the other five.
The brain does not honor a consultant’s diagram. Complex psychological differences emerge from many interacting processes. Even associations between brain features and broad psychological traits can be small and difficult to reproduce. A large analysis by Scott Marek and colleagues found that reproducible brain-wide association studies of individual differences often require samples in the thousands. That is a useful warning against assigning each system a tidy circuit from a small study. See Marek et al. (2022).
The six systems
1. Cognition
Cognition covers the abilities involved in learning, reasoning, remembering, representing a problem, and finding a workable answer. The relevant abilities depend on the task. Navigating a complex policy, learning a new interface, noticing a statistical error, and planning a route do not place identical demands on a person.
The practical mistake is to infer cognition from surface confidence, education, vocabulary, or one successful performance. A familiar task can hide difficulty; an unfamiliar format can hide ability. Fatigue, stress, missing knowledge, poor instructions, and an inaccessible interface can also reduce observed performance without changing a person’s underlying capacity.
Useful questions include:
- What must the person notice, remember, compare, or infer?
- Which knowledge does the task assume?
- How much information must be held in mind at once?
- Does performance improve when the information is represented differently?
- Are we observing ability, learned skill, current state, or some mixture?
Cognition is not a ranking of human worth. It is also too broad to support a useful decision without a defined task and a defensible measure.
2. Threat Detection
Threat Detection concerns recurring sensitivity and response to possible danger, loss, criticism, uncertainty, and error. It roughly corresponds to the Big Five domain called Negative Emotionality in the BFI-2 and Neuroticism in many other accounts.
The functional label helps ask what a person detects and how the response shapes action. A cautious analyst may notice a failure path that an enthusiastic team misses. The same sensitivity may make an ambiguous review feel more dangerous and slow a decision. Whether that response helps depends on the threat, the task, and the cost of a miss.
High sensitivity is not cowardice, and low sensitivity is not courage. A person can tolerate physical risk and react strongly to social rejection. A careful analysis should identify the domain, the trigger, the expected consequence, and the behavior that follows.
3. Reward Seeking
Reward Seeking concerns attraction to activity, social engagement, excitement, positive affect, and possible rewards. It roughly corresponds to Extraversion.
The label does not mean that some people like rewards and others do not. It asks which rewards are salient, how strongly they pull, and what level of stimulation or social contact a setting provides. A lively brainstorming session may energize one person and drain another. A role built around frequent outreach can fit someone who readily approaches social reward while imposing a larger recurring cost on someone who prefers lower stimulation.
Do not turn this into a dopamine story. Reward-related behavior involves many processes, and a trait score does not reveal a person’s neurotransmitter levels. The useful level of analysis here is the fit between recurring tendencies and the demands or rewards of the behavior.
4. Exploration
Exploration concerns engagement with new ideas, experiences, aesthetics, and possibilities. It roughly corresponds to Open-Mindedness or Openness to Experience.
Exploration can help when the problem is poorly defined and the search space matters. It can also produce more options than a deadline can tolerate. A person who enjoys conceptual novelty may explore an elegant new tool while ignoring the boring, proven process that already works. A person who prefers familiar methods may protect a team from needless novelty and miss a better approach.
This is why “more” is not the automatic answer. The question is whether the behavior and setting benefit from exploration, how much, and at which stage.
5. Social Cohesion
Social Cohesion concerns compassion, trust, respect, cooperation, and the management of interpersonal conflict. It roughly corresponds to Agreeableness.
A cooperative person may preserve relationships and notice the human cost of a decision. That same tendency may make direct disagreement harder when a group is confidently wrong. A more skeptical or combative person may expose the flaw and create unnecessary conflict while doing it.
Social cohesion is therefore not a goodness scale. A team needs enough trust to coordinate and enough honest disagreement to detect errors. The relevant question is how a person’s recurring interpersonal style fits the relationship, power structure, and type of decision.
6. Resource Management
Resource Management concerns recurring patterns of organization, productiveness, responsibility, persistence, and control of time, effort, obligations, and materials. It roughly corresponds to Conscientiousness.
A detailed plan can reduce error in a repeated process. The same planning impulse can become expensive when the problem changes every hour. A flexible improvisor may excel during an emergency and leave a trail of undocumented decisions that creates the next one.
The name is meant to broaden the practical question. What resources must be managed? For how long? With which external supports? A calendar, checklist, automated handoff, or well-designed default can change the demands placed on the person. The trait and the system design belong in the same conversation even though they are not the same construct.
How the systems may interact
The six areas should not be read one at a time and then added like grocery prices. Their combinations may change how a person approaches a task.
Consider a novel software problem. Exploration may draw someone toward unfamiliar approaches. Cognition may help the person understand the new system. Threat Detection may reveal security risks. Resource Management may determine whether the promising idea becomes a tested, documented change. Social Cohesion may affect how the person introduces the idea to colleagues. Reward Seeking may make the collaborative chase energizing or exhausting.
That story is plausible. It is not yet a validated interaction model.
To establish a specific interaction, we would need a defined construct, reliable measures, a stated prediction, an adequate sample, and a test against simpler explanations. Until then, use combinations to generate questions, not to announce a hidden type. “High Exploration plus low Resource Management equals visionary” is a character sketch, not science.
Context still changes expression
A trait describes a recurring tendency, not a command. Clear roles can help a less organized person coordinate. Psychological safety can make disagreement easier for someone who is sensitive to social threat. A familiar process can free cognitive capacity for the part of the task that is genuinely new.
People also select and shape their environments. Someone who enjoys exploration may seek work with novelty, gain more practice in unfamiliar problems, and build a reputation that brings further novel work. The apparent fit can grow over time. Person and context are tangled in both directions.
How to use Six Systems
The framework is most useful when it turns a vague judgment about a person into specific, testable questions about a behavior.

Start with a defined behavior and setting
“Be innovative” gives you nothing to analyze. “Generate three distinct approaches before selecting a solution during the weekly product review” names an action, occasion, and minimum result.

Describe the demands of the behavior
Which abilities does it require? How much novelty, stimulation, interpersonal conflict, uncertainty, and self-organization does it impose? A task can demand several systems at once.

Gather evidence, not impressions
Look at repeated behavior across relevant settings. Ask about preferences and experience. Use validated measures when the decision warrants them. Do not infer a stable tendency from one bad meeting, a job title, or a stereotype.

Form more than one hypothesis
A person who avoids a workshop may dislike social stimulation, fear evaluation, lack the needed background knowledge, or see no reward. Each explanation suggests a different next step.

Change the task or context before trying to change the person
Could written input replace spontaneous performance? Could a checklist reduce memory demands? Could private review come before public disagreement? A better match can make performance more reliable without asking for a personality conversion.

Test and revise
If written input improves contribution, that result supports some explanations and weakens others. It does not reveal a permanent type. Observe what changes, look for alternative causes, and revise the design.
A short example
This is a hypothetical example, not a research finding or client case.
A team member rarely contributes during rapid group ideation, so the manager concludes that she lacks creativity. Six Systems opens several alternatives. The meeting may demand fast cognition under interruption. Public evaluation may activate Threat Detection. Continuous social stimulation may make the setting less rewarding. Or the person may prefer exploring ideas alone before discussing them.
The team tests a simple change: send the problem a day early, collect written ideas before the meeting, and use the meeting to compare them. If the person now contributes strong options, “not creative” was a poor diagnosis. The changed format reduced some demands and made ability easier to observe.
That result still does not tell us which system supplied the explanation. A second comparison, such as private preparation with and without advance notice, could separate time to reason from public evaluation. The framework did its job when it produced better hypotheses and a more informative test.
What not to do
- Do not assign people to six-system “types.”
- Do not infer a diagnosis or brain mechanism from a label.
- Do not use an unvalidated Six Systems profile for hiring, promotion, clinical care, or another high-stakes decision.
- Do not treat a rough mapping as proof that a renamed construct has inherited the validity of a Big Five measure.
- Do not assume that the apparent weakest system caused one observed behavior.

How Six Systems relates to the Behavioral State Model
The Behavioral State Model and Six Systems answer different questions.
- Behavioral State Model: What may be supporting or constraining a particular behavior for this person or population in this setting and time?
- Six Systems: Which broad individual-difference questions may help us understand recurring task preferences, sensitivities, and abilities?
Six Systems can optionally inform hypotheses about the Personality component of BSM. Cognition may also prompt questions relevant to the Abilities component. But Six Systems is not required by BSM, and it is not BSM’s empirical foundation. You can use the eight-component diagnostic without using this framework at all.
Six Systems compared with the Big Five
The Big Five is a broad empirical taxonomy of personality traits. Six Systems borrows that broad structure for five of its areas, gives those areas functional labels, and places cognition beside them.

The reframing is useful only if it improves the questions practitioners ask. It does not make the underlying traits new. A separate comparison explains where Six Systems follows the Big Five, where it changes the frame, and what would need validation.
Evidence, limits, and a validation agenda
The strongest scientific foundation under the current framework belongs to the established constructs it draws from: broad personality domains, facets, and cognitive abilities. The weakest claim would be that arranging them under these six names creates a validated new system. It does not.
A serious validation program would need to answer several questions:
- Definitions: Can each system be defined precisely enough that different researchers distinguish it from the others?
- Measurement: Do proposed measures show reliability and the intended factor structure across relevant populations, languages, and settings?
- Convergent and discriminant validity: Do the five personality systems relate to established traits as predicted without becoming mere duplicate labels? Does Cognition remain measurably distinct?
- Incremental validity: Does the framework improve explanation or prediction beyond validated personality and ability measures, task analysis, and contextual data?
- Practical value: Do teams using it design better tests or better-fitting behaviors than teams using simpler methods?
- Fairness and misuse: Where do interpretations fail across groups, and which decisions should remain out of scope?
Until those questions have answers, the responsible claim is narrow: Six Systems is a structured way to generate hypotheses about individual differences and task fit. Its value must be demonstrated in use, and any specific interaction remains a proposal to test.
A note on the name
Other researchers have used similar names for unrelated models. A 1999 psychophysiology paper tested a six-system model of anxiety and arousal. Joseph Royce also described six systems in an older theory of personality integration, using different components. Those are not this framework.
To avoid confusion, this page uses Jason Hreha’s Six Systems model when the author or identity needs to be explicit. The defining six areas here are Cognition, Threat Detection, Reward Seeking, Exploration, Social Cohesion, and Resource Management.

- Early articles: Introduced the six functional labels and explored possible relationships among them.
