Situation-specific reward

Published 1 min read

What is a situation-specific reward?

A situation-specific reward rewards a behavior in one context but not another. The Behavior Change Technique Taxonomy also calls this discrimination training.

Example

A coffee shop could offer a reward for purchases made before 8 a.m., while offering none for the same purchases later. The time of the visit determines whether the reward is available.

The taxonomy identifies this as technique 14.6. The context-dependent rule defines the technique. Whether it changes visits requires separate evidence.
