Reward incompatible behavior
What does it mean to reward incompatible behavior?
Rewarding incompatible behavior means rewarding an action that cannot happen at the same time as the unwanted action.
How it works
You cannot bite your nails while both hands are in your pockets. A reward tied to keeping them there would reward an incompatible action.
Why it matters
The action has to be genuinely incompatible in the situation you want to change. Even then, preventing nail-biting for a few minutes does not show that it has stopped elsewhere.
This is technique 14.7 in the BCT Taxonomy.
