Non-specific reward

Published 1 min read

What is Non-specific reward?

A non-specific reward is given in return for effort or progress in a behavior and is not classified as a material or social reward.

How the technique is defined

The reward still depends on a specified effort or behavior. The word non-specific describes how the reward is classified. A prior promise of the reward is also an incentive.

Illustrative example

A participant receives access to a preferred activity after meeting an agreed attendance criterion.

Evidence and limits

The original BCT Taxonomy v1 definitions identify this as technique 10.3. This supports the definition and distinctions above. The taxonomy was developed to describe intervention content; it does not establish how effective this technique is for a particular person or setting.
