Material reward (behavior)
What is a material reward for behavior?
A material reward for behavior is money, a voucher, or another valued object delivered contingent on effort or progress in performing the behavior.
How the technique is defined
The reward is delivered after the qualifying behavior. If it was promised beforehand, the intervention also contains a material incentive. An unexpected reward still needs to be assessed for its effect on the person and behavior.
Illustrative example
An agreed program gives a participant a voucher after verified attendance at a training session.
Evidence and limits
The original BCT Taxonomy v1 definitions identify this as technique 10.2. The definition identifies what the program delivered. It does not tell us whether participants repeated the behavior afterward.
