What are Information about health consequences?

This technique provides factual information about the health effects of performing or not performing a target behavior. It is the most commonly used behavior change technique and also one of the least effective when used alone.

How it works

Health consequence information works through the rational pathway: if people understand risks, they should change behavior. However, decades of research show that information alone rarely changes behavior because barriers are usually not knowledge gaps. People know smoking is harmful but smoke anyway. The technique is necessary but insufficient without addressing motivational, habitual, or environmental barriers.

Applied example

A diabetes prevention program that only tells patients ‘High blood sugar increases risk of blindness and amputation’ provides accurate information but rarely changes dietary behavior because patients already know this. Adding skills training and environmental restructuring produces actual change.

Why it matters

Information about health consequences is necessary but rarely sufficient for behavior change, yet remains the default healthcare intervention because it matches the medical model of inform-and-expect-compliance.
