What is Information about antecedents?
This technique provides information about the situational triggers and environmental cues that typically precede the target behavior. Understanding antecedents helps people anticipate and manage the conditions that lead to action.
How it works
The ABC model (antecedent-behavior-consequence) emphasizes that behaviors are triggered by specific conditions. Providing information about triggers helps people identify patterns and develop management strategies. Common antecedents include time of day, location, emotional state, and social context.
Applied example
A person trying to reduce snacking learns through self-monitoring that snacking always occurs between 3-4 PM when bored at work and in the break room where snacks are visible. With this antecedent information, they plan alternative activities and avoid the break room.
Why it matters
Information about antecedents empowers people to intervene before the behavior occurs rather than trying to stop it once triggered, when resistance is much harder.
