What are Monitoring of emotional consequences?
This technique involves tracking the emotional effects of performing or not performing the target behavior, creating awareness of mood and well-being changes the behavior produces.
How it works
Many behavior changes have emotional consequences that go unnoticed. Exercise improves mood, but the effect is only motivating if noticed. Monitoring creates a feedback loop: perform the behavior, notice feeling better, reinforce the behavior for next time. Especially useful for behaviors whose emotional benefits are real but subtle.
Applied example
A person who journals their mood before and after exercise discovers a consistent pattern: they always feel notably better afterward. This emotional data becomes a personal motivation resource for difficult days.
Why it matters
Monitoring emotional consequences makes invisible benefits visible, providing personally relevant evidence often more motivating than external health information.
