What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is the process of using real-time physiological data (heart rate, muscle tension, skin conductance, brain waves) to help people learn to regulate bodily functions that are normally outside conscious awareness.
How it works
Sensors measure physiological signals and display them as visual or auditory feedback. By watching their heart rate on a screen, for example, a person can learn which mental strategies (slow breathing, relaxation imagery) actually reduce it. Over time, they develop the ability to regulate the function without the feedback device. The mechanism is operant conditioning: the person learns through trial and error which internal actions produce the desired physiological change.
Applied example
A person with chronic tension headaches wears a surface EMG sensor on their forehead during sessions. They can see in real time when their muscle tension increases, and they learn specific relaxation techniques that reliably reduce it. After several weeks, they can apply these techniques without the sensor.
Why it matters
Biofeedback demonstrates that many ‘involuntary’ physiological responses can be brought under conscious control with the right feedback, opening clinical applications for pain, anxiety, hypertension, and attention disorders.
