Adding objects to the environment

Published 1 min read

What does adding objects to the environment mean?

Adding objects to the environment means supplying a physical item that helps someone perform a behavior. A tool can make an action possible or easier; a visible object can also remind the person to act.

How it works

A filled water bottle on your desk puts water within reach. It can serve as a reminder, too. But objects do not have to do both jobs: the useful question is what the item changes about performing the action.

The Behavior Change Technique Taxonomy calls this technique 12.5. Its definition concerns providing an object that supports performance. A leaflet containing information alone does not meet that coding rule.

Why it matters

Before asking someone to try harder or remember more, look at what they have available. Is the needed object there? Is it practical to use? Adding the right item can address a concrete obstacle. Then check whether it gets used and supports the behavior you intended.
