What is Body changes?
Body changes refers to altering physiological states or physical sensations to support behavior change. This includes interventions that change arousal levels, reduce cravings, manage pain, or otherwise modify the body’s internal state to make the desired behavior easier or the unwanted behavior less appealing.
How it works
The technique recognizes that behavior is not purely cognitive: physical states powerfully influence decisions. Hunger makes unhealthy food more tempting, fatigue undermines exercise intentions, and physical pain reduces the ability to concentrate. Interventions may include nicotine replacement therapy (reducing cravings), exercise (changing arousal and mood), sleep improvement (supporting self-regulation), and breathing techniques (managing anxiety). The key insight is that changing the body’s state can be easier and more effective than trying to override it through willpower.
Applied example
A person trying to make better food choices at the grocery store eats a healthy snack before shopping. By changing their body’s hunger state, they reduce impulsive purchases driven by immediate craving rather than planned nutritional goals.
Why it matters
Body changes as a behavior change technique highlights that the physical state of the body is itself an intervention target, not just the background condition in which decisions happen.
