What is Ventromedial prefrontal cortex?
The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is a brain region involved in value-based decision-making, emotion regulation, and the representation of self and others. It integrates emotional and cognitive information to guide adaptive choices.
How it works
The vmPFC encodes the subjective value of options during decision-making, creating a common neural currency that allows comparison across different types of rewards (food vs. money vs. social approval). It also plays a critical role in regulating emotional responses through connections with the amygdala, and in extinction learning (learning that a previously feared stimulus is now safe). Damasio’s somatic marker hypothesis proposes that the vmPFC integrates emotional body signals (gut feelings) into decision-making, explaining why patients with vmPFC damage make poor real-world decisions despite intact intelligence.
Applied example
Patients with vmPFC damage perform normally on intelligence tests but make catastrophically poor life decisions: they gamble their savings away, enter harmful relationships, and cannot learn from negative consequences. Their intelligence is intact but their ability to integrate emotional signals into decisions is destroyed.
Why it matters
The vmPFC demonstrates that rational decision-making requires emotional input, challenging the view that emotions and reason are opposed and showing that they must work together for adaptive behavior.
